🪙 Do You Have Any of These Valuable Dollar Coins?
Coin Teacher often gets the same question from viewers:
“Are my dollar coins worth anything?”
The answer — some of them absolutely are! 💰
This guide summarizes everything he showed in the video — three types of modern U.S. dollar coins that can sell for $30 to over $5,000 depending on the error and condition.
🥇 1️⃣ Presidential Dollar — Missing Edge Lettering Error
Look at the edge (the rim) of your Presidential $1 coins — most have writing engraved around the side.
🕵️♂️ Valuable Error: If yours has no writing at all, you’ve found a Missing Edge Lettering Error!
💵 Value:
- Common ungraded examples → $30+
- High-grade certified examples → $100 or more
💡 Tip: Check both edges carefully — sometimes the error only shows on part of the coin!
🦅 2️⃣ 2000-P Sacagawea Dollar — “Wounded Eagle” Error
Next, grab any 2000 Sacagawea dollar coin and flip it over to the eagle side.
🔍 Look closely at the eagle’s stomach — do you see a faint diagonal line cutting through it? That’s the Wounded Eagle error!
💵 Value:
- Ungraded coins → around $60
- Certified coins (PCGS/NGC) → $130 to $300
🧠 Coin Teacher Tip: Use a 10× magnifier or macro lens to spot the line clearly — it’s subtle but worth the search!
🥣 3️⃣ The Legendary “Cheerio” Dollar — Worth $5,000+
This is the rarest one of all!
When the U.S. Mint first introduced the Sacagawea dollar in 2000, they included a few in Cheerios cereal boxes as part of a promotion. 🥣
Most were plain test strikes — worth just $1.
But a few featured extra feather detail on the eagle’s tail — these are the famous “Cheerio Dollars.”
💵 Value:
- Plain tail: $1 (normal)
- Detailed tail feathers: $3,000–$5,000+ at auction!
💬 “That’s right,” says Coin Teacher, “the difference between a $1 coin and a $5,000 coin is all in the tail feathers.”
