Most 1975 Roosevelt dimes are worth just 10 cents. But a tiny handful β only two known in existence β have sold for over $450,000 each. Could you own one of these once-in-a-lifetime rarities? Letβs dive in. π΅οΈββοΈπ
β Normal 1975 Dimes β Nothing Special
Millions of 1975 dimes were struck at three U.S. Mints:
- Philadelphia (no mint mark): Worth face value
- Denver (βDβ mint mark): Worth face value
- San Francisco (βSβ mint mark): 2.8 million proof coins made (mirror-like finish, made for collectors)
Most of these are extremely common. But one incredible mistake turned an ordinary dime into a six-figure treasure.
π₯ The Legendary Error: 1975 βNo Sβ Proof Dime
Hereβs what makes this coin so valuable:
β Proof strike (mirror fields, frosted details)
β Missing βSβ mint mark (the error)
β Only two confirmed examples known to exist
One specimen sold for $456,000 at Heritage Auctions in 2019.
π How to Identify the Rare 1975 βNo Sβ Dime
Step 1: Proof or Bust
Proof coins look completely different from circulation dimes:
- β¨ Mirror-like fields (reflects like a phone screen)
- βοΈ Frosted details (Rooseveltβs face looks βwhiteβ)
If your coin looks dull or circulated β itβs NOT the rare one.
Step 2: Check for Mint Mark
Look just above the β75β in the date:
- Normal proof: Tiny βSβ mint mark
- Rare error: No mint mark at all
β οΈ Remember: Only proof coins without the βSβ matter. A regular Philadelphia dime (also no mint mark) is worth 10Β’.
Step 3: Where Could One Be Found?
Both known examples came from 1975 proof sets. If you have or inherit an unopened proof set from the 1970s, you could be holding history!
πΈ What to Do If You Think You Found One
- 𧀠Handle carefully by the edges (use cotton gloves)
- πΈ Take clear photos of both sides + edge
- β Submit to PCGS or NGC for authentication (other graders wonβt cut it)
- πΌ Auction only through major houses (Heritage or Stackβs Bowers)
β οΈ Never clean the coin! Even wiping with a cloth could erase thousands in value.
π Why Collectors Pay $456,000+
- Extreme rarity: Only 2 known worldwide
- Historical importance: The last major βNo Sβ proof error before strict Mint controls
- Trophy coin: Elite collectors pay premiums for pieces almost no one else can own
Some experts believe the next example could break $500,000+ at auction. π
π€― Real Talk: What Are the Odds?
Finding one is rarer than hitting the lottery jackpot⦠but not impossible. Millions of proof sets were made, and many remain unopened. Someone, somewhere, could still make numismatic history.
